LATISSE™ (bimatoprost ophthalmic solution) 0.03% is the first drug, approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), to promote eyelash growth.

Allergan, the maker of LATISSE™, states that based on clinical trials: "LATISSE™ users can expect to experience longer, fuller, and darker eyelashes in as little as eight weeks, with full results in 16 weeks."

Lumigan™, a drug used to treat glaucoma which contains the same active agent as LATISSE™, has long been known to promote longer, thicker, darker lashes. This fortunate side effect has led Allergan to seek FDA approval for the cosmetic use of bimatoprost ophthalmic solution 0.03%. The story of the development of LATISSE™ is quite similar to the drug Rogaine™ -- the active ingredient in Rogaine™, minoxildil, was being used in the treatment of hypertension when it was discovered that it had the unexpected side effect of regrowing scalp hair.

LATISSE™ is used differently than Lumigan™ as Lumigan™ is an eyedrop where as LATISSE ™ is to be dabbed along the lash line directly.

How does LATISSE ™ work? This is not yet fully understood, however, research suggests that the growth of eyelashes occurs by increasing the percent of hairs in, and the duration of, the anagen (or growth) phase. Lashes can grow longer, thicker and darker because bimatoprost can also prolong this growth phase.
