Transgender Rhinoplasty Bellevue & Kirkland

When considering the facial features that influence gender identity, the nose may not be high on many lists. However, for many transgender and gender non-conforming people of all identities, the nose can contribute to gender dysphoria and unwanted attention on their appearance. With subtle differences in masculine and feminine noses, many patients seek out rhinoplasty surgery to alleviate gender dysphoria. Dr. Craig Jonov at The Gallery of Cosmetic Surgery performs the best transgender rhinoplasty Bellevue and Kirkland offers.

Overview: Transgender Nose Job

A nose job for gender confirmation purposes tends to only vary from a traditional nose job in its purpose and goals. Many of the surgical techniques used are the same. Gender non-conforming people of all identities do seek nose jobs. However, it is most common among the male-to-female transgender demographic since a masculine nose on someone who identifies femininely can stand out.

If a patient experiences gender dysphoria concerning their facial appearance due to their nose or other features, it is important to find the ideal treatment plan for them. For many, this may include a nose job or facial feminization surgery. Gender dysphoria is a dangerous condition that coincides with higher suicide rates and accidental deaths. Alleviating this via gender confirmation surgery can reduce these risks.

Types Of Nose Jobs

Nose jobs come in two primary types: open rhinoplasty and a closed rhinoplasty. In the past, closed rhinoplasty was preferred and most commonly performed. However, as surgical technology and techniques progressed, the majority of nose jobs today use the open technique.

The open technique involves an incision along the columella of the nose and will alter the internal structure of the nose. This is used to repair a deviated septum and address unwanted humps or bumps on the bridge of the nose. The closed technique generally only repairs minor concerns such as the tip of the nose or minor deviation of the septum.

Most transgender nose jobs will be open rhinoplasties. This allows Dr. Jonov to make the most changes and best sculpt the nose into the desired shape. You can discuss these options during a consultation at The Gallery of Cosmetic Surgery.

Benefits

Transgender rhinoplasty offers the benefits and advantages of a nose job and a gender confirming procedure. While many patients may experience individual benefits of the procedure, some of the advantages and benefits of a transgender nose job include:

  • Treatment of gender dysphoria
  • Nose and facial appearance better align with gender identity
  • Correction of a deviated septum
  • Aids in a physical transition
  • Flattens unwanted humps or bumps
  • Make nostrils smaller if necessary or desired
  • Can alter the projection of the nose tip
  • Size better matches patient’s preferences
  • Facial profile better matches gender identity
  • Repair of previous nose injuries
  • Low risk procedure
  • Can combine with other gender confirming procedures
  • May improve mental health
  • Performed by experience rhinoplasty and facial feminization surgeon

Differences In Traditionally Masculine & Feminine Noses

Masculine and feminine noses have subtle differences that make them take on their more traditionally masculine or feminine appearance. For people who are physically transitioning, matching their chosen identity’s features can be an important step.

It is not always viable to change every single feature of the nose or make it perfectly masculine or feminine. What is possible with a transgender nose job ultimately depends on the starting anatomy. Dr. Jonov will discuss the results you can expect during a consultation. The table below touches on some of the differences between masculine and feminine noses.

MasculineFeminine
  • Larger overall
  • Straighter bridge
  • Wider
  • Larger nostrils
  • More prominent
  • More likely to appear crooked or dented
  • Roughly a 90 degree angle from nose tip to upper lip
  • Smaller overall
  • Slightly more concave bridge and shape
  • Narrower and slimmer
  • Higher tip (the angle between nose tip and upper lip is about 10 degrees higher)
  • Thinner skin
  • Smaller nostrils

Dr. Jonov can alter the nose tip, bridge, and make the nose smaller and narrow. However, widening the nose or making it bigger is not always possible. However, if you want to masculinize the nose, he can create a more neutral tip and straighter overall shape. This should appear more masculine, yet natural. Otherwise, individual anatomy plays the biggest role in what results are possible.

Before & After Transgender Nose Job

Consultation

At your first appointment at The Gallery of Cosmetic Surgery, you will meet with Dr. Craig Jonov. He will want you to describe your goals for the procedure, pertinent medical history, certain aspects of your lifestyle, and other basic information. This will help him determine if you are a good candidate for a transgender nose job in Bellevue.

After the discussion, he will physically examine the nose. This may include evaluating the skin, size, shape, and projection of your current nose. Dr. Jonov will then let you know if he believes you are a good candidate. He will also go into detail about what would be possible and the results you could expect.

Finally, you will receive a finalized price quote for the procedure and information about financing options. Your quote remains valid for ninety days in which you can schedule your procedure.

Nose Job Surgery

On the day of surgery, you will be placed under general anesthesia. Dr. Jonov will begin by making a small incision on your columella, the portion of skin that separates your nostrils. This will give him access to the full structures of your nose.

From there, based on your needs, he will reshape the bridge and tip of the nose. If feminizing, he may also make the nose smaller, more petite, and thinner. If masculinizing, he may attempt to make the nose appear wider and create an overall sharper appearance. Additionally, Dr. Jonov can also repair a deviated septum at the same time.

The surgery can take anywhere from two to four hours depending on the extent of the procedure. If you are undergoing multiple procedures, this may also extend surgical times. Once finished, Dr. Jonov will stitch the columella and ensure the nose fits the goals of the procedure.

    Recovery

The recovery of gender confirming rhinoplasty is virtually the same as a traditional nose job. You may have packing inside the nose and will have a split on the outside. This will be removed sometime during the first week of recovery. It is not uncommon to experience swelling, bruising, and pain.

Dr. Jonov will prescribe prescription pain medications and antibiotics. He will also provide other instructions during your recovery such as avoiding unnecessary and strenuous exercise. Most patients take around one to two weeks off work. Usually, bandages and other materials are removed on or within the first week of recovery.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Do Nose Jobs Age Well?

Typically, yes. While the nose is not immune to aging, many of the changes are subtle and unnoticeable for several years. For example, the nasal tip may droop slightly and the skin will likely thin which can alter the overall appearance. However, nose jobs are one of the most popular and subtle surgeries for a reason, they hold up well when performed correctly.

Can It Be Done During Facial Feminization?

Yes, rhinoplasties are frequently part of a facial feminization procedure. Facial feminization involves multiple facial plastic surgeries to create a more feminine face. Dr. Jonov specializes in facial feminization procedures and performs several per year.

    Are There Non-Surgical Options?

If you only want minor alterations or you may not require surgery for the look you want, dermal fillers are an option. Injections of filler can straighten the tip, create a larger looking nose, and alter the shape of the tip. This may be especially helpful for FTM rhinoplasty. If Dr. Jonov believes this is an option for you, he will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the surgical and non-surgical routes.

Will Insurance Cover A Transgender Rhinoplasty?

Yes, if a nose job is performed as part of a transgender transition and/or to treat gender dysphoria many insurances will at least partially cover the costs. The Gallery of Cosmetic Surgery does work with most major insurance companies to accommodate affordable, life-saving gender confirming surgeries.

What Is The Cost Of A Transgender Nose Job In Bellevue?

The cost for a transgender rhinoplasty starts at the same price as a traditional nose job with Dr. Jonov, $8,995. However, the price may vary based on what is necessary for the surgery. Following a consultation at The Gallery of Cosmetic Surgery, you will receive a more precise price quote for your transgender nose job in Kirkland.
