Overview: Mommy Makeover

Although motherhood comes with many rewards, it may take a toll on a woman’s body by stretching muscles and skin and causing unwanted fat deposits. Since diet and exercise usually aren’t enough to restore a woman’s pre-pregnancy shape, a mommy makeover can help. By undergoing a mommy makeover, women can restore their body and look and feel their best. Board-certified cosmetic surgeon Dr. Craig Jonov offers customized mommy makeovers to women in the Seattle area and takes great pride in helping moms feel more confident in their post-baby bodies.

Definition of a Mommy Makeover

A mommy makeover is a combination of procedures performed to help mothers correct common issues that arise due to pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding. These procedures typically focus on the breast and abdomen and may include a tummy tuck, breast augmentation, breast lift, breast reduction, and/or liposuction.

Women who undergo multiple procedures at the same time can reduce their recovery time, surgical costs, and time spent under anesthesia. A mommy makeover is simply a convenient and cost-effective way for women to resolve their post-pregnancy cosmetic issues all at once.

After a mommy makeover, women can enjoy a slimmer, smoother waistline, lifted and reshaped breasts, reduced excess fat throughout their bodies, and an overall refreshed and rejuvenated look.

Benefits of a Mommy Makeover

One of the greatest benefits of a mommy makeover is the fact that it can be customized to meet every woman’s needs. If a woman is bothered by pockets of fat that simply will not go away with diet or exercise, they may benefit from liposuction. If they are facing excess skin and weakened muscles around the abdomen, a tummy tuck may be ideal.

For some women, liposuction and a tummy tuck may be performed. Regardless of the types of issues a woman is dealing with after their pregnancy, a mommy makeover can assist them in regaining their shape.

A mommy makeover can serve as a starting point for changing a woman’s lifestyle and making their appearance a priority. For another woman, the procedure helps them look as good on the outside as they feel on the inside. Following a mommy makeover, many women report great joy from being able to wear the clothing they desire in confidence and participating in activities they may have avoided in the past.

Good Candidates for a Mommy Makeover

The ideal candidates for a mommy makeover are women who are sure they are finished having children and are self-conscious about their post-baby bodies. They should be fully recovered from pregnancy, in good general health, have a body mass index less than 30, and either have no medical problems or only minor issues that are under control. In addition, women who hope to undergo a mommy makeover should have stopped breastfeeding for at least 4 to 6 months prior to surgery. Women who are at a stable weight and maintain realistic expectations for their cosmetic surgery results make the best candidates.

What to Expect During a Mommy Makeover Consultation

During a mommy makeover consultation at his Seattle office, Dr. Jonov will get to know a woman’s cosmetic goals and answer any questions they may have about the surgery. If he determines a woman is a good candidate, he will recommend a combination of body contouring procedures that can help her resolve her specific post-pregnancy cosmetic concerns and restore her confidence. A consultation with Dr. Jonov is also a great opportunity for patients to view before and after pictures and learn more details about each of the breast and abdomen procedures in her recommended treatment plan.

Surgical Techniques Used During a Mommy Makeover

Mommy makeovers are not a one-size-fits-all procedure. It is customized to meet each patient’s goals. Usually, however, Dr. Jonov addresses the breasts and tummy. Here’s a closer look at the types of procedures that may be performed to resolve the various aesthetic concerns many women have after giving birth.

Breasts

Loss of breast volume and/or breast tissue, sagging and/or drooping (ptosis), excess skin, and breasts that have become too large are common issues women notice with their breasts after pregnancy. Breast augmentation with implants, breast lift, breast augmentation with a lift, and breast reduction surgery may help. The goal of these cosmetic surgery procedures is to create a feminine and youthful contour to the breasts and ensure that they are sized appropriately for the patient’s goals and frame.

Abdomen

Most women are bothered by their abdomen after having a baby. They may gain stubborn excess fat and/or a persistent bulge in the abdomen, sagging and loose skin, stretch marks, and other unsightly skin irregularities. A tummy tuck or liposuction of the abdomen may solve these problems by removing excess tissues, tightening the abdominal muscles, and reshaping the entire abdominal area for improved contour.

Lower Body

Pregnancy often affects a woman’s lower body by leaving excess skin in the buttocks, hips, and things. A lower body lift including liposuction and skin tightening of the buttocks, hips, and thighs may improve the cosmetics of the lower body.

The Mommy Makeover Procedure

The doctor usually performs the mommy makeover in a single session that addresses all areas of the patient’s concerns at one time. In most cases, we use general anethesia and the session takes several hours. While a mommy makeover may involve a number of procedures, two of the most common are breast lift and tummy tuck.

A breast lift involves an incision that is made in each breast to access the underlying tissues. Various incision patterns may be used depending on how much correction is required. Once the incision is made, the tissue is reshaped and lifted and excess loose skin is removed. Some women opt for breast implants during this time in order to add breast volume. This is known as an augment lift.

During a tummy tuck, Dr. Jonov makes an incision across the stomach just above the pubic area so that he can remove excess skin and fat for a smoother contour. A tummy tuck also tightens and reshapes any muscles that are loose and separated.

Recovering From a Mommy Makeover

The recovery period after a mommy makeover procedure varies greatly and depends on the specific combination of procedures Dr. Jonov performs. Most patients find that the abdomen takes the most time to heal.

In most cases, however, women can return to work and resume their daily activities 2 to 3 weeks after the surgery. Strenuous exercise and activities are safe around 2 to 3 months after a mommy makeover.

Frequently Asked Questions About Mommy Makeovers

Is a mommy makeover safe?

While a mommy makeover comes with risks, just like other surgeries, it is generally safe, when Dr. Jonov–a highly skilled surgeon–performs it.

When is the ideal time for a mommy makeover?

Dr. Jonov recommends that mothers wait at least a year after having their last child before undergoing the procedure. Since most mommy makeover procedures involve recovery periods that make it a challenge to care for small children for several weeks after surgery, many mothers wait until their children are a bit older.

How many procedures are involved in a mommy makeover?

The answer to this question varies from patient to patient. While some women only require two procedures, others may benefit from as many as five. It all depends on their unique goals.

Does undergoing more procedures mean a longer recovery time?

Some women are intimidated by the fact that a mommy makeover involves multiple procedures in a single session. However, a patient’s recovery time is often the same as for one procedure. While the length of surgery is dependent on what procedures the doctor performs, it typically takes between 2 to 5 hours.

What if I get pregnant after undergoing a mommy makeover?

If possible, it’s best to wait until you’re done having children before undergoing a the surgery. However, if you do get pregnant, there is no danger but find that your results may disappear.

Can a mommy makeover resolve stretch marks?

If stretch marks exist on an area of the body (i.e. breast, tummy, etc.) that is going to be lifted and tightened, they may be removed when the excess skin is trimmed away. For any stretch marks left behind, as well as any other skin irregularities that may exist, there are skin-rejuvenating techniques that can help fade and remove these imperfections.

Will a mommy makeover leave scars?

Scarring will occur after a mommy makeover. However, Dr. Jonov strives to carefully close incisions to reduce scarring. It fades over time and you can disguise it with bathing suits and undergarments.

Will a mommy makeover make me look fake?

The purpose of a mommy makeover is to restore the pre-pregnancy shape and confidence of women after giving birth. It is not to make them look like Barbie dolls. Dr. Jonov strives for a natural look rather than one that makes a woman appear fake and “plastic”.

Can I undergo a mommy makeover if I have not had children?

A mommy makeover is just a name for a group of combined procedures. It’s not limited to mothers and may be a good option for patients who have gained and then lost a significant amount of weight. Dr. Jonov can design a customized treatment to target various problems with different procedures that are combined in one session.

How long do results last?

Patients can maintain the results of their mommy makeover for years and years by making healthy lifestyle choices and staying in good shape. Unless a woman gains a significant amount of weight or becomes pregnant again, she won’t typically have to seek revisions down the road.

During/After Mommy Makeover Surgery

All mommy makeovers are performed under general anesthesia in an accredited surgical facility. Depending on how many techniques are combined, the surgery could last multiple hours. It is common for patients to have a short hospital stay with this surgery. Most women will require a full month to recover, but many will be able to return to work within 2 weeks. The results will reveal themselves in multiple stages as the breast implants settle into their natural placement and the incisions begin to heal. It generally takes a full year for all of the changes to make their final appearance.

I am a single mother in her early 30’s. Giving birth to two wonderful children was beautiful and life changing. Unfortunately, it also changed my body in ways that I could not repair on my own. No amount of time in the gym could get rid of the extra skin and stretch marks on my stomach or my sagging breasts. I have always had a lot of confidence, but became very unhappy with my post pregnancy body. My husband found the “Mommy Makeover” procedures and encouraged me to do something for myself that I could feel good about. I chose Dr. Jonov because of his expertise, candor, and from recommendations from past clients. The tummy tuck and breast lift that I received are fairly invasive procedures and not to be taken lightly. My goal was not to improve on what God gave me, but to get my body back. I am currently only six weeks post surgery and am extremely happy with my results. For the first time in six years, I will be comfortable wearing a bikini again this coming summer. I feel good about myself when I look in the mirror and have confidence about my body when I am out in public.

MaryIt is a wonderful feeling! Thank you, Dr. Jonov.
